“And when eight days were fulfilled, and the Child was to be circumcised, He was given the name Jesus, which was named by the angel before He was received into the mother’s womb.” (Luke 2:21)
In the Old Testament, in Genesis 17, we read that the Lord made an everlasting covenant with Abraham and all his descendants.
Circumcision was the sign of this covenant. Every little boy eight days old had to be circumcised. He then belonged to the people of Israel. Then he also received his name.
The Child of Mary was given the name Jesus after circumcision. Joseph and Mary had not thought up this name themselves.
The angel Gabriel had visited Mary and said to her, “And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. ” (Luke 2:31-32a)
Joseph was also visited by the angel while dreaming.
The angel spoke to him, “Do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:20-21)
