“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.” (Deuteronomy 6:4)
The Christian faith is unique. No other religion confesses the same things about God — otherwise it would not be a different religion after all. However, Christianity does share its roots with Judaism. The one God in Whom we believe, is the same God Who revealed Himself to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the forefathers of Israel. We can read about Him both in the Hebrew Scriptures and in the New Testament (the Scriptures written after the coming of Jesus Christ).
Some people think Christians believe in three gods. But this is not true. In Isaiah 45:5 it is stated clearly: “I am the Lord, and there is no other, besides me there is no God.” And Ephesians 4:6 speaks about “one God and Father of all, Who is over all and through all and in all.”
Since there only is one true God, He is worthy of our full devotion. He commands us to love Him with all our heart, soul and strength. He does not tolerate the worship of other gods, things or forces besides Him (see Exodus 20:3-5). He is above all.
God being “one” also means that He is unambiguous and never changes. He never contradicts Himself. He is utterly reliable and trustworthy.
Do you believe there is one true God who is above all? Do you know Him? Can you describe how you know Him?
