“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal” (Matthew 6:19)
Praying, doing good deeds and fasting are not ways of collecting “spiritual treasures” that earn you points as a believer. In Matthew 6:19-24 Jesus is addressing people who are wrongly concerned about money and possessions. They want to gain all they can from things that give only temporary gratification. These so-called treasures can also be taken away. The eye (Matthew 6:22) plays an important part in this. Your eye allows you to see all kinds of things. These things create desires which can fill your thoughts and your heart. When you follow those thoughts and desires, it will have consequences for the way you live. What does your eye draw to your attention? You will see and discover more and more of what God wants to give you if you know that the most important and lasting things in your life are to be found in your relationship with God. As a result, the things of God’s kingdom will increasingly fill your life. Then you will receive a wealth of inner peace, love and trust that will last. Don’t focus on temporary things, but focus on what the Father in heaven wants to give you and has in store for you.
This is what will give you a full and abundant life.
Pray: Heavenly Father, help me to deal with earthly things correctly. Thank you for giving me all the care I need.
