It is written…

“You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only shall you serve.” (Luke 4:5)

Having read in the previous devotional how Jesus resisted the tempter in His physical trial, we now see a temptation of a different kind taking place.

The devil took Jesus up a high mountain and in a moment of time showed Him all the kingdoms of the world. And he said to Him, “To you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. If You, then, will worship me, it will all be Yours.”

It must have been a breathtaking sight, which Jesus was shown here. The kingdoms of the world resplendent in their glory. If He just bowed down in worship to the devil, who here disguised himself as an angel of light, all that power and glory would be His.

But Jesus answered with authority, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and Him only shall you serve.’” Again Jesus replied to His adversary with words from the book of Deuteronomy.

To resist the devil, it is important that we know the Bible.
So that we can answer: It is written…
