Jesus is King

“While He blessed them, He parted from them and was carried up into heaven.” (Luke 24:51)

It is called Ascension Day in English, Himmelfahrtstag in German, Ascension in French, Ascensión in Spanish and Hemelvaartsdag in Dutch. Why such an unusual name for a Christian holiday? Jesus returned to his heavenly glory as King and Conqueror, no longer bound by earthly gravity. Finally, the disciples’ minds and hearts could begin to comprehend what Jesus had accomplished (Luke 24:45-49). But Jesus’ resurrection did not mean that Jesus would stay on earth forever, nor did Jesus’ return to heaven mean that the connection with Him was broken. From heaven, Jesus continued His work for the world. About forty days earlier, Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey (John 12:12-14). He had already shown that He was the saving King of Israel. Now, as the victorious King, after his hard struggle, he was returning home to his Father. On Ascension Day we honour Jesus as our King. He completed His work of redemption on earth and continues it from heaven. With his Word and His Spirit, He can be wherever He wants and wherever He is needed.
Read: Luke 24:50-53.
