“And while staying with them He ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, He said, you heard from Me.” (Acts 1:4)
Forty days had passed since Jesus’ resurrection. How the disciples must have enjoyed His presence and their conversations with Him. In Acts 1:4-9 we read of Jesus’ last conversation with His disciples on earth. It seems that the disciples expected that after Jesus’ resurrection, the Kingdom He had promised would come soon and they were curious about it. When and how? Perhaps you can identify with this. But the disciples had to leave that to the Father in heaven: they had another task. They had to spread the good news of the gospel and the coming of Jesus’ Kingdom to the world. This is a task that every follower of Jesus still has today. For this task Jesus would send a Helper: His Holy Spirit. (John 14:26; John 15:26) Jesus promised his disciples the power of His Spirit for the task they had been given. He would continue to connect them with Jesus. His power would give them courage, confidence, insight and authority for the work they would do in Jesus’ name. The first thing they had to do was to wait in Jerusalem for the coming of this Helper. Doing Jesus’ will often begins with a simple act of obedience.
