“When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.” (Acts 2:1-2)
Do you recognize that? You wait for something to happen, and yet you are surprised when it then actually happens. Would that have been the same for the disciples on this day? Once again, they had gathered to pray. Many people had come to Jerusalem to celebrate the feast of Pentecost. Pentecost was also called the Feast of Harvest. At this feast, God was thanked for the harvest they had just gathered. For Jesus’ followers, this feast of Pentecost took on a whole new dimension. What surprise there is in the word suddenly. In a moment, the entire house where Jesus’ followers were gathered was filled with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is God’s presence on earth in every believer everywhere. Jesus fulfilled His promise that day (Acts 1:8).
The people in Jerusalem were celebrating the Jewish Harvest Festival. On this day Jesus chose to pour out His Spirit. Jesus had been sown into the earth like wheat grain, had died and risen again. Now the first “harvest” of His work became visible: believers became filled with His Spirit.

Question: Try to imagine yourself among Jesus’ disciples. What do you see, what do you hear? What is your first reaction?
