” …A sound like a mighty rushing wind… filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them.” (Acts 2:2-3)
The Holy Spirit did not come in a physical form, as when Jesus came to earth. The Hebrew word for spirit also means wind or breath. We breathe to keep our bodies alive and moving. Likewise, the Holy Spirit came, and continues to come, as a new breath in the lives of Jesus’ followers. The Holy Spirit sets us in motion. In a motion towards Jesus, with the desire to live like Him. In a motion towards fellow people, with the desire that they too will get to know Jesus’ love.
In the Old Testament, God sometimes sent fire to make His presence known. (Exodus 16:16-18) On this Pentecost, God sent down His fire on all believers present in the house. He sent His Spirit on: Jesus’ brothers who first refused to believe in Him (John 7:5); Thomas, who doubted (John 20:26); Peter, who denied Jesus (John 18:27); John and James, who wanted an important place next to Jesus (Mark 10:37). The Holy Spirit does not fill perfect believers. He fills every believer to transform them by Jesus’ love.
