”Praise the LORD, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name.” (Psalm 103:1 NIV)
In Psalm 103, God is praised for who He is and what He gives. Praising here means blessing. Many English translations render it as ‘Bless the Lord’. God is being praised because He:
forgives sins and redeems people from the pit (vs. 3-4)
provides for the daily needs of His children (vs 5)
is compassionate, gracious and loving (vs 6-12)
cares for His children as a father would (vs 13)
knows that we are fragile and vulnerable (vs 14-16)
is faithful to His promises (vs 17-18)
has all power as Creator and King of heaven and earth (vs 19).
Psalm 103 is a powerful reminder of God’s grace and love. All creatures in heaven and on earth are exhorted to honour this God (verses 20-22). Despite our weaknesses and shortcomings, we are constantly surrounded by His faithfulness and grace. When you are facing many difficulties in your life, it can sometimes seem impossible to find the words to praise God. Psalm 103 is a strong reminder of who God is. He will never forsake His children.
In the last verse the poet says to himself: ‘Praise the LORD, my soul!’ (Psalm 103:22 NIV)
What about you? What words will you use to bless God today? Say them out loud!
