“For to us a Child is born, to us a Son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder” (Isaiah 9:6).
It is not easy to sing when you see so many things around you that do not make you happy … The prophet Isaiah was given words to do this in dark times for himself and the people of Israel.
A prophet was a spokesman for God. Often, he had to warn the people of a coming judgement if they ignored God’s commandments. The circumstances in Isaiah’s day were not positive. Neighbouring countries threatened to conquer the land. Spiritual leaders focused on their own comfort rather than being good examples.
Besides sharp criticism, Isaiah was also allowed to pass on God’s promises. There would be light again. There would be peace again (Isaiah 9:1-4). God would not accomplish this through a large, violent army, but through the birth of a Child… A Child with royal titles: Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. People would marvel at Him. He would be full of wisdom (Counsellor). He would come as a human being and at the same time be God’s mighty Son, one with the Father. He would establish eternal peace. He would restore what people had broken down. In the dark times of Isaiah, this song of God’s promise rang out.
Prayer: Thank you, Father, that in these dark days Your words of light, grace and restoration continue to resound. Help me to keep speaking and singing your Word.
Today I want to sing this song for You…. (Sing or read a song that honours God. You could also listen prayerfully to Handel’s Messiah https://youtu.be/1ZLXZ8cZhSU?si=52XjPdT6SFCqJ1jk)
