“God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”
(John 4:24)
God is spirit. That means that he has no physical body like humans or animals. He is not discernible with our five senses.
Throughout history, people have found it difficult to believe in an invisible God. People groups around Israel had idol statues or carved images of their gods that they could see and worship. Israel was forbidden to make an image of God in the “ten commandments” (see Exodus 20). In other words, God made it a very important rule that people shall not bow down to a carved image. The eternal, spiritual God can not be reduced to something material.
That God is spirit means also that he is not bound to a particular place. Therefore all people on earth can worship him at the same time, wherever they are.
Do you find it difficult to believe in an invisible God? Do you see how having a physical body would confine God’s omnipresence, and would limit the possibilities of worshiping him?
