“Their cry for rescue from slavery came up to God. And God heard their groaning” (Exodus 2:23-24)
The Israelites find themselves in a horrible situation of slavery and genocide. They can’t change their circumstances
themselves. But they know there is a God in heaven, and they cry out to him. They groan, they cry for rescue. And God hears.
Apparently, for God to hear us doesn’t always require a carefully formulated prayer. A “cry for rescue” may hardly be a prayer at all, but it is sufficient for God. In Luke 18:7, Jesus rhetorically asks: “Will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night?”
Many people in the Bible, and many modern believers as well, have experienced how God heard their cry for rescue. Psalm 116:1-2 sings in admiration: “I love the LORD, because he has heard my voice and my pleas for mercy”.
Let these examples encourage you if you are in a difficult situation as well. Maybe you can’t find the right words for a
“beautiful” and balanced prayer. That doesn’t matter. God knows what you need, and He is ready to hear your groaning.
Take time today to cry out to God to rescue you from the things that still enslave you. How did you feel after you did that?
