“When the child grew older, she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses” (Exodus 2:10)
Exodus 2 tells us that an Israelite couple received a son — a dangerous situation in those days, since Pharaoh had ordered the killing of all baby boys. The mother tried to hide her baby, but eventually had to find another solution. She put him in a basket among the reeds by the river bank, where the Egyptian princess found the child and adopted him as her son. She even appointed his natural mother as his nurse until he was weaned!
At first sight, this seems a wonderful personal story about the miraculous rescue of an Israelite baby boy. But it is far more. Behind the scenes, God was preparing the rescue of a whole people. This little boy called Moses would later lead the Israelites out of Egypt, through the desert, and towards the promised land of Canaan.
The Israelites certainly were not aware of God’s work in the life of this child. Their situation seemed just as hopeless as before. But the Lord was preparing for their rescue! He is sometimes working behind the scenes, long before we notice.
When looking back on your life, have you ever experienced that God was working behind the scenes?
