“Say therefore to the people of Israel, ‘I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians…’” (Exodus 6:6)
Moses has expressed his despair about the situation in Egypt. Pharaoh doesn’t want to let the Israelites go, he even makes things worse! In response to Moses’ complaints, God reassures him that He will really bring them out “from under the burdens of the Egyptians”. God does so by reminding the Israelites of his personal name, which He had revealed to Moses.
Many modern translations write this name as “the LORD”, with small capitals. In Hebrew, it reads YHWH: the short form of “I AM WHO I AM”! So, whenever we read “LORD” with small capitals in the Bible, we are reminded of God’s self-revelation as the eternal, independent, unchanging God who is faithful to his people and to his promises.
God’s name reveals his identity. And God’s identity is the foundation underlying our faith. In difficult situations, when
everything seems to go wrong, this is the most helpful thing to do: remind ourselves of Who God is! He is faithful, He will do what He has promised. He is the LORD.
How does knowing that God is “I AM WHO I AM” helps you in your daily life?
