“I will take you to be my people, and I will be your God” (Exodus 6:7)
God has a special relationship with the people of Israel, based on the covenant He made with their forefathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Now they have grown into a real people, God renews his promises and covenant with them.
Today’s text clearly shows that the relationship is initiated by the LORD, not by the people. That’s a universal pattern. People naturally don’t even seek for God (Romans 3:11). But God seeks a relationship with them because He wants their eternal and ultimate well-being, which can only be found in God.
In Exodus, we read how the Israelites were God’s special people. But especially the New Testament makes clear that God’s blessings are not limited to this people alone. Believers in Jesus are called “vessels of mercy, which he has prepared beforehand for glory— even us whom he has called, not from the Jews only but also from the Gentiles” (Romans 9:23-24).
God takes the initiative by calling you to repentance and forgiveness, to a personal relationship with the LORD.
Do you answer his call?
