“And the Lord said … ‘When you work the ground, it shall no longer yield to you its strength. You shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.’” (Genesis 4:12)
Adam and Eve were the first human parents. When their sons Cain and Abel grew up, these boys didn’t get along. Genesis 4 records that Cain became very angry with Abel because the Lord accepted Abel’s gift, but He did not accept Cain’s offering.
God warned Cain: “You know that if you do what is right, I will accept you. But if you don’t, sin is ready to attack you” (Genesis 4:7, ERV). But Cain did not pay attention to God’s words. He was so angry that he killed his brother.
As a consequence, Cain could no longer farm the ground that had opened its mouth to receive Abel’s blood. He had to leave the land and would be “a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth” (Genesis 4:12). When Cain heard this, he complained: “This punishment is more than I can bear!”. He was filled with self-pity instead of repentance.
