Death is serious, not funny

It is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment.” (Hebrews 9:27)

The reality of physical death is undeniable. But we can discuss its meaning. Is death just a natural phenomenon that inevitably belongs to the concept of life? Many claim it is. They hold the opinion that people come into existence by the natural process of conception and birth, and after a while simply cease to exist when they die. Some people joke about death, for example on Halloween or other festivities.

The Bible does not agree. It says that death is “the last enemy to be destroyed” (1 Corinthians 15:26). It is something sad and evil. It was not part of God’s original creation but is caused by sin. And at the end of time, death will be no more.

But till then, death is serious. It is an enemy. Moreover, the Bible says death is not the end. “After that comes judgment”, the book of Hebrews tells us. When humans die, their body returns to dust, as we all know. But our soul will live forever, either in eternal happiness in God’s presence or in hell, depending on our relationship with the Lord God during our life on earth.

Given the seriousness of death, do you think it’s okay to make fun of it?
