“Because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, ‘Abba! Father!’” (Galatians 4:6)
Once more, Paul warns against “the weak and worthless elementary principles of the world” that can enslave us. These belong to the times “when you did not know God”. But when we get to know Him, the situation becomes totally different! Then we can live in communion with God. The Holy Spirit focuses our hearts on our heavenly Father. We may even call Him “Abba”, which is a very intimate and personal word, comparable to “daddy”.
God is great and holy. He wants a close relationship with us. He wants us to be His beloved children. And therefore, He sends His Spirit into our hearts to transform us and fill us with love, trust and reverence towards Him. Being God’s children also implies that we are “heirs according to promise”, of “an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven” (1 Peter 1:4). It’s clear we did not earn this inheritance. In ourselves, we are not worthy to receive anything! But in His amazing grace, God not only wants to save us from sin and death, He also wants to bless us abundantly.
What is your view of God? Does the word “Father” or “daddy” fit to your relationship with Him?
