“And He had to pass through Samaria.” (John 4:4)
The rumors about Jesus spread quickly. The Pharisees heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John. This fanned their anger against Jesus. Therefore, Jesus left Judea and set out again for Galilee. On that journey, He had to go through Samaria.
He arrived in the city of Sichar, where Jacob’s well was. Jesus was tired from the journey and sat down by the well. It was about 12 o’clock in the afternoon. His disciples had gone away to the city to buy food.
A woman came from Samaria to draw water. Jesus, thirsty from the journey, asked her for a drink. The woman looked up in surprise, and asked Him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” For the Jews usually did not want to associate with Samaritans.
Jesus answered, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.” Jesus wants the woman to see who He really is and what precious gift He has for her.
What do you think of when you hear the term ‘living water’?
