“The woman said to Him, ‘Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet.’” (John 4:19)
The Samaritan woman did not understand what Jesus meant by living water. She said to Him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water?” Jesus seemed to imply that He was greater than the famous Jacob, who dug this well to provide fresh water for himself, his family and his cattle. How could that be?! Jesus said to the woman, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
Then the woman asked Him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.”
Surprisingly, Jesus then told the woman to go call her husband, to which the woman responded she had no husband. Then Jesus told her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband.”
This answer made clear that Jesus was no ordinary Jew. The Samaritan woman recognized Him as a prophet, and longed to learn more from Him.
