Mary’s Song

‘And Mary said: My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior’ (Luke 1:46,47).

In Ein Kerem, a small town close to Jerusalem in Israel, a church was built in the past near the spot where Elizabeth and Mary are said to have met. On the grounds of this church, Mary’s words from Luke 1:46-56 are inscribed on a wall in a variety of languages. These words are called the ‘Song of Mary’ or the ‘Magnificat’.
Around the world, this hymn is still read and sung. Mary did not praise herself in this song. A deep joy at what Gód was doing in her life made her find words to praise God. She knew God as Lord (King) and Savior, taught by centuries of history of her people.
In Mary’s time, Israel was occupied by the Romans. In her song, the God of Israel is diametrically opposed to the selfish and harsh ambitions of the Roman emperor. God is a King of love and justice. Again and again He rescued Israel from all kinds of trouble and forgave the people their sins. Through this God, Mary was made a part of His special plan of salvation. No wonder she was so full of joy!
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord. And my spirit exalts in God my Savior. For He has looked with mercy on my lowliness. And my name will be forever exalted. For the mighty God has done great things for me. And his mercy will reach from Age to age.
And holy, holy is His name.
