For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers (Hebrews 2:11)
Did you know that, if you believe, you have a special brother? His name is Jesus. When He came to this earth to save sinners from the power of death, He had to become fully human for that. But not only that: a new family was created. Hebrews 2:11 tells us that the one who makes holy and those who are made holy are of the same source. So Jesus and all who believe in Him are of the same family.
A perfect brother
He is a perfect brother. At the same time He understands your life, which may be far from perfect. Listen to this verse: “Because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.” (Hebrews 2:18) He was made fully human in every way (verse 17), so that He would be a merciful High Priest.
He understands
He understands the mess in which we humans live. He understands the power of temptations that comes to us on a daily basis. The great news is: He stands next to you as a brother, completely understanding the trouble you are in. But He does much more than that. He is able to help! He is the one who provides a way out of sin. He himself never sinned and that is why He could pay the penalty. He is the brother who never ever lets you down. He bails you out of jail. Indeed, he gives new meaning to the word ‘brother’.
Fellow heirs
Jesus has completed his commission, and received eternal glory as a reward. Since we have been adopted as children of God, we have become fellow heirs of this glorious inheritance. “The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.” (Romans 8:16-17). This inheritance is “imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time” (1 Peter 1:4-5).
