“But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, Who proceeds from the Father, He will bear witness about Me.” (John 15:26)
After the confession statements about God the Father and God the Son, here are some statements about the Holy Spirit. He is as much God as the Father and the Son. He is Lord, and thus is rightly worshipped. The Spirit is not merely an animating force in people, but God in person. This is also emphasized by saying that the Spirit is the Giver of life. This is something that only God can do, as it is expressed in 1 Samuel 2:6: “The Lord kills and brings to life.”
The life-giving work of the Spirit can already be seen in the creation story. He then hovered over the face of the waters. The life-giving work of the Spirit can also be seen in the lives of believers. He works in their hearts. He renews them and incorporates them into fellowship with Jesus Christ. He delivers them from the power of sin and evil. We read this, among other things, in 2 Corinthians 3:17, “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” This same chapter also says that the Spirit transforms believers more and more into the image of God. Everything that is not good in their hearts and lives must disappear and give way to love, joy and peace — fruits of the Spirit.
Do you experience the work of the Holy Spirit in your life?
