Asking God’s blessing on all you do

Establish the work of our hands for us— yes, establish the work of our hands.” (Psalm 90:17)

At the end of Psalm 90, Moses asks for God’s blessing on everything he does. This too is important as we enter a new year and perhaps make all kinds of plans. A new year is a good time to think about what we would like to change in our lives:

  • Perhaps we set ourselves certain goals in our job or business.
  • We may resolve to spend more time with family or friends.
  • Maybe we need to work on our health.
  • There is always a need for volunteers – perhaps there is a task for us in that area?

We could continue this list. It can be very helpful to consciously think about these things from time to time. But if we are not careful, we may forget our dependence on the Lord. Psalm 127:1 warns us, “Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.”

James also reminds us that we don’t even know what will happen tomorrow, and that therefore we cannot be too certain about the future. We are free to make plans, but always in awareness: “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” (James 4:15)

Do you long for God’s blessing on your work? Why is that important to you?
