“And he [=Jesus] lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said: ‘Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.’” (Luke 6:20).
Jesus declares people blessed. This is not an ordinary blessing. It’s not like congratulating someone at a birthday party. We hope that the recipient of our good wishes will enjoy good health and have a wonderful new year. Likewise we wish each other prosperity at the start of the new year and we congratulate others on a promotion.
However, when Jesus speaks as God’s representative, words take on a different meaning. Then it is not about another successful year. It is not about the next step on the career ladder. Being blessed is viewed from the perspective of God’s Kingdom. When we know the Name of Jesus, we will one day be allowed to live with Him in heaven. Being blessed is part of God’s kingdom. Here on earth, we do not belong to the rich or the poor. Here, we belong to God’s family. There, every member has enough. That is why they sing: “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.” (Psalm 23:1).
A blissful life also means a life without the burden of sin. Sin maintains all worldly structures and focuses on personal gain. In the Kingdom of God, Jesus will reign. Jesus reigns with wisdom, love, and justice. Would you like to share in that happiness? Believe in Jesus and let Him save you.
