To celebrate is to reflect with joy on something that is important to you. Since the fourth century, the Christian Church has celebrated Jesus’ ascension. Jesus’ Kingship is worth celebrating every year. With every Christian holiday we celebrate, we honour Jesus as our King. Jesus’s disciples had not yet discovered that Jesus had not left them forever. They would discover later why Jesus’ departure was necessary and important. Seeing Jesus leave them must have been a confusing moment for them. But two angels encouraged them at that moment: “He is coming back!
We only celebrate an event that has already happened. We cannot celebrate weddings, births and victories before they take place, but you can look forward to it with anticipation. Christians celebrate Ascension Day as an event that has happened. Christians also celebrate every Christian holiday in anticipation of Jesus’ return. We celebrate in the expectation that one day Jesus will be with us forever, and we with Him. And, that celebration will never end…
