An elder in church… “must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.” (Titus 1:9)
It is vitally important for believers to remain in the truth. They should stay away from “irreverent babble” that would lead them into ungodliness. They should also be able to discern between true and false teaching, and therefore need “instruction in sound doctrine”.
A great place to receive such teaching, is a local church. Every church should have elders who are able to give their fellow believers instruction and to rebuke those who contradict it. Church members should be open to receive loving correction from their elders and from each other.
The ultimate authority in any theological questions or disputes is God’s Word, the Bible. Studying this Word regularly while praying for wisdom and guidance of the Holy Spirit, is the best way to grow in knowledge and understanding. If we do so, “we will not be influenced by every new teaching we hear from people who are trying to deceive us—those who make clever plans and use every kind of trick to fool others into following the wrong way. No, we will speak the truth with love. We will grow to be like Christ in every way” (Ephesians 4:14-15, ERV).
