“The world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.” (1 John 2:17)
God is eternal, He is beyond time. He has always existed and will always be. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). So, when believers are to live with Him eternally, this blessed life is not limited by time either.
God’s kingdom will never end. “They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever” (Revelation 22:4-5).
For us humans, that’s hard to grasp. We are so used to time limits that we can hardly imagine what everlasting life must be like. “We bring our years to an end like a sigh” (Psalm 90:9). And even world history as a whole has a beginning and an end, as today’s text shows: “The world is passing away”. But not so God’s kingdom. The abundant life that God has promised his children will never end.
How does the fact that eternal life is everlasting change your perspective on the present world?
