“But I know that the king of Egypt will not let you go unless compelled by a mighty hand. So I will stretch out my hand and strike Egypt with all the wonders that I will do in it; after that he will let you go.” (Exodus 3:19-20)
God orders Moses to go to Pharaoh, but He tells him beforehand that “the king of Egypt will not let you go”. That’s a pretty discouraging prospect for Moses. And yet, it is good to know that God is in control and that his plans can’t be stopped by a stubborn Egyptian king. Eventually, Pharaoh will have to let the Israelites go, whether he wants to or not.
In the Bible, there are more records of God foreknowing people’s response. For example, when the prophet Jeremiah is sent to the Israelites, God tells him: “You shall speak all these words to them, but they will not listen to you. You shall call to them, but they will not answer you” (Jeremiah 7:27). God is never taken by surprise on people’s reactions. Humans can’t hinder God’s plans.
This truth is poetically expressed in Isaiah 46:9-10:
“I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose’”
