We heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, because of the hope laid up for you in heaven.” (Colossians 1:4-5)

Yesterday, we read about the Colossians’ faith and love. Today, we read a little further to discover what makes their faith and love continue: they have a firm hope. They know what is waiting for them: they will spend eternity in God’s presence, enjoying eternal life in its fullness. The apostle Peter writes about the same hope in his first letter when he points his readers to the imperishable, undefiled and unfading blessings God keeps for them in heaven (1 Peter 1:3-4)

At first, it may sound a little strange that this hope is “laid up in heaven” since the Colossians are living on earth. But Jesus explains why this is a good thing. As opposed to earthly treasures, those stored up in heaven cannot be destroyed by moths and vermin, nor stolen by thieves (see Matthew 6:19-20). They are kept safe and cannot be ruined or lose their beauty.

This hope helps believers endure in faith and love. Do you share this hope? Do you have treasures in heaven?
