“And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness.” (Luke 4:1)
In this account, written down by Matthew and Luke, we are taken to the desert, where Jesus was tempted by the devil for forty days.
Only a short time before, He had been baptized by John. And while He was getting baptized, the Holy Spirit descended on Him and a voice sounded there from heaven saying, “You are My beloved Son, with You I am well pleased!”
In the wilderness, Jesus sought a place of solitude to be in the presence of His Father. He was led by the Spirit, our passage says.
It seems like a paradox, being full of the Holy Spirit and then being tempted by the devil. Yet this is not strange, for it is precisely at such times that faith is tested.
Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to battle Satan, and by the power of the Holy Spirit He gained the victory.
When we experience fellowship with God, a moment later temptation can arise in our hearts. Doubt can overpower us. Then let us look to Jesus who fought the battle for us and overcame the devil.
