Jesus and the Sabbath

“And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as was His custom, He went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and He stood up to read.” (Luke 4:16)

After being tempted in the desert, Jesus, by the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee and the rumor about Him spread throughout the area.

He visited all the synagogues in the surrounding towns. The people praised Him for the pleasant words He spoke to them.

Then Jesus came to Nazareth, the place where He had spent His youth. When it was Sabbath, the day set apart by God, Jesus went to the synagogue as was His custom. There the familiar words sounded, “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.” (Deuteronomy 6:4) The laws from the Torah were read. This was followed by the readings from the prophets.

On this Sabbath, Jesus takes charge of the reading. He is handed the scroll of the prophet Isaiah. Then He turns the scroll until He gets to the place from which He wants to read and teach.

In Luke 4:16 we can read how important the observance of the Sabbath was to Jesus.
How do you experience the Sabbath or Sunday? Is this day also important to you? And why?
