“For He whom God has sent utters the words of God, for He gives the Spirit without measure.” (John 3:34)

In John 1:32, John the Baptist says that he saw the Spirit of God descend from heaven and remain on Jesus. This was a visible sign from God. It shows that Jesus is not an ordinary man. He is God the Son, and therefore the Father gives Him the Holy Spirit without measure. Jesus Himself says that his words “are full of the Spirit and life” (John 6:63). After all, out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.

In his turn, Jesus gave the Holy Spirit to his disciples. He promised to send the Holy Spirit to them when He would be no longer on earth (John 15:26). And when He had risen from the dead, “He breathed on them and said, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit’” (John 20:22). However, there is a difference between Jesus and his followers. Jesus has the Spirit “without measure”, but believers receive only some spiritual gifts. Some of them receive the gift of working miracles, others the gift of prophecy or the utterance of wisdom, and so on. They are all “empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as He wills” (1 Corinthians 12:11).

Thank you, God, for the gift of your Holy Spirit!

Have you received the gift of Holy Spirit already?
