“Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus said, “You have said so.””
Matthew 27:11
Jesus has been announcing the Kingdom of God. Many people hoped that He would expel the Romans and restore political freedom. But Jesus explained that his Kingdom is first of all spiritual. It’s about people being restored to God, accepting his authority over their lives, and honoring Jesus as their Lord.
For many people, that was a disappointment. And when Jesus in addition claimed to be God’s Son, the religious leaders decided that He should be killed. Jesus was not the kind of Savior they were hoping for.
Since the political authorities would not sentence Jesus to death for claiming to be God’s Son, the religious leaders misused his announcement of God’s Kingdom to accuse him of political rebellion. Exactly because they rejected him as their Lord and Savior, they presented him as “the King of the Jews”. “By their unrighteousness [they] suppress the truth” (Romans 1:18).
Jesus was the King of the Jews indeed, be it not in a political way. He wants to be your King as well. Does He have the highest authority over your life?
