“The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, … the son of Abraham.” (Matthew 1:1)
The life of Abraham is described in the first book of the Bible. God made a covenant with him, and Abraham became the forefather of the people of Israel. God had already promised this while Abraham and his wife were still childless: “I will make of you a great nation” (Genesis 12:2).
The Israelites were this nation; they had a special covenant relationship with God. Jesus was born as a descendant, a “son”, of Abraham. He was part of this privileged nation that God had chosen. But there is more. God promised Abraham that “in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed” (Genesis 12:3). That is exactly what happens through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us … so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith” (Galatians 3:13-14).
The ultimate blessing – forgiveness and eternal life – comes to the nations through Jesus Christ, the Son of Abraham. Have you received and accepted this blessing?
