“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (Matthew 3:2)
When Jesus was about to begin His ministry, He was announced by John the Baptist. This man was a prophet who came to “prepare the way of the Lord”. He told people that the kingdom of heaven was at hand. After centuries of waiting, it would now finally come. God’s redemptive work was about to enter a decisive new stage by the ministry of Jesus Christ.
Jesus was the beloved Son of God the Father, and in Him God’s kingdom has come to humanity. God Himself became human, so that heaven and earth are no longer separate realms. Jesus Himself explained: “The kingdom of God is not coming in ways that can be observed, nor will they say, ‘Look, here it is!’ or ‘There!’ for behold, the kingdom of God is in the midst of you” (Luke 17:20-21).
The kingdom of God is not a physical kingdom, it is “not of this world” (John 18:36). It expresses itself in the presence of Jesus and in God’s dominion in the lives of His followers.
