Scripture is a good source of instruction and teaching

Instruction

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

Large parts of the Bible do not contain explicit instructions from God, but are nevertheless instructive for us. When the apostle Paul refers to stories about the unfaithfulness of the people of Israel, he writes that those stories “were written down for our instruction” (1 Corinthians 10:11). In another letter, he even states that “whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction” (Romans 15:4).

Some Bible stories provide good examples of God-fearing men and women — take for example the life story of Samuel. Others show the disastrous effects of a sinful lifestyle on yourself, your family, and your country — read the book of Judges. We learn how God forgives murderers if they repent — see the story about David and Bathsheba. Countless stories record God’s saving power and righteousness.

The Bible is “profitable for teaching” because it has been designed by God Himself for this purpose. It is an infallible instruction manual for life; not only life here on earth, but also eternal life in God’s presence.

Have you ever read the Bible stories in order to learn who God is and what He wants you to do?
