“Jesus, when He began His ministry, was about thirty years of age, being the son (as was supposed) of Joseph, the son of Heli.” (Luke 3:23)
Luke describes the genealogy of Jesus in this chapter. It is noteworthy that Luke starts from Heli, the father of Mary, the mother of Jesus. Matthew, on the contrary, starts from Abraham to Joseph, the father of Jesus. (Matthew 1) These genealogies show that Jesus is a descendant of King David on both his father’s and mother’s side.
When he was about thirty years old, Jesus began His ministry among the people of Israel. That was also the age when priests were to begin their ministry.
Jesus’ ministry would last about three and a half years. A short time, but long enough to make Himself known to His people as the long-awaited Messiah.
Jesus was, as was supposed, the Son of Joseph.
At the end of the genealogy, we read in Luke 3:38 that Jesus’ lineage went back to “the son of Enos, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the Son of God.” Jesus is the Son of God. John speaks of Him, “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen His glory” (John 1:14).
So, the Lord Jesus was a very special Person. Why, do you think, that is so emphasized in the Bible?
