The Magnificat

“And Mary said: My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior” (Luke 1:46)

Mary had become pregnant in a supernatural way. Shortly after the visit of the angel Gabriel (Luke 1:26), Mary travelled to see her cousin Elizabeth, who had become pregnant when she no longer expected it. During her visit to Elizabeth, Mary was inspired to sing a song of praise to God.
Just like Hannah and Zechariah, Mary spoke with wonder about the great God who cares for people who need Him. Mary spoke about the One who turns everything around. Earthly wealth and power do not have the final say in God’s kingdom. There the weak are brought to the fore. The rich people who think they have everything under control will be left empty-handed, while the poor will know abundance. Mary also referred to God’s faithfulness in her song: He made a covenant with Abraham, when he was still a solitary individual. Yet, from him would be born descendants destined to be God’s people. And through Abraham, the whole world would be blessed (Genesis 12: 2-3).
Mary knew the history of her people and the promises God had made to them. In her joy, she saw a glimpse of what the Lord was doing. And she was amazed: He is using me in His plan!
Prayer: Father in heaven, thank You that You do not look upon those who exalt themselves here on earth. Thank You that You care for the small and weak, and for everyone who needs Your help. Therefore, I too want to glorify You with all that is within me.
