“After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy” (Matthew 2:9-10).
The Magi are listening politely to King Herod’s words. Their disappointment gives way to joyful anticipation. They are going to Bethlehem! That is the place to be. The king is sending them there. Their long, arduous journey has not been in vain after all. In high spirits, they saddle their camels and set off.
Evening falls and they look up at the starry sky, as is their custom. And there, shining brightly, is the star they had seen in the East. Great is their joy when they see the heavenly sign again. To their surprise, the star goes before them and stops above the house where the Child is to be found.
When the Magi had seen the star for the first time, they had set off on their journey full of expectation. And now it has reached its highest point in the right place. For them, this is confirmation that their interpretation of the meaning of star is correct. They are ecstatic with joy.
