To fall or to rise

“And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, ‘Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed’” (Luke 2:34)

Simeon stood in the temple, with the Child Jesus in his arms, praising God. Amazed, Joseph and Mary listened to the words he spoke about their Child. As Simeon placed the Child back in Mary’s arms, he blessed them.

After his song of praise, Simeon suddenly became solemn. The Holy Spirit showed him the effect Mary’s Son would have on the people of Israel.

This Child is the long-awaited Messiah. Yet many will not believe in Him.
He is the stone over which they will stumble and fall. Luke 20:18 says, “Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, and when it falls on anyone, it will crush him.”

But for those who do believe in Jesus, He has become the cause of their salvation. Those who follow Him will sometimes stumble, but will rise again in His strength.

Simeon emphasizes that this Child is a sign from God to Israel. Yet many will oppose Him and reject Him.

Believing or not believing in Jesus has consequences. Have you already made the right choice?
