“And the angel answered [Mary], ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God.’” (Luke 1:35)
The holy Son of God, born from an ordinary young woman. This sounds incredible, yet it really happened. This event turned the world upside down and ushered in a new era. God the Son entered our world as a little baby. He became a man.
Why did He do this? “For us men and for our salvation,” says the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed. In so doing, it echoes John, who says, “In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent His only Son into the world, so that we might live through Him.” (1 John 4:9)
That we may live is not a given. Our first ancestors rebelled against God and therefore had to die. We all inherited their sinful nature, and therefore we too are “dead in the trespasses and sins” (Ephesians 2:1). But God did not abandon us to our fate. To save us, He came to earth. He put down His glory and became a helpless baby. This is really proof of unimaginable love!
