We know for sure that there is prayer in heaven. Romans 8:34 shows us that Jesus is in heaven, praying for us. “Christ Jesus is the one who died — more than that, who was raised — who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.” Also the Holy Spirit, who is God and is in heaven, prays for us. “For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words” (Romans 8:26).
But do people, besides the Lord Jesus, also pray in heaven? The Bible indicates so.
Prayer comes natural to believers
The angels in heaven know what is going on on earth, because they rejoice when a sinner repents and believes (Luke 15:10). It seems very unlikely that the saints in heaven do not know what happens on earth, when the angels do know. Hebrew 12:1 says that we are surrounded by a ‘great cloud of witnesses’, the Old Testament believers. There might be some indication there that these believers are conscious of what happens on earth. One verse clearly says so. In Revelation 6:10 martyrs are praying that God will judge the earth. This confirms that there is some knowledge about what happens on earth among the saints in heaven, though we do not know how much. And they are praying about it. That is logical, because prayer comes natural to believers. Why would they stop once they are in the presence of God?
Yet we have to recognize that from the Bible we can say very little about how much the saints in heaven are aware of what is going on on earth, so we cannot be dogmatic about how much they are praying for what is happening here.
Prayers that we are praying now will not be needed
Will prayer in heaven continue once Jesus has returned and the new earth and the new heaven will have come? Much of the prayers that we are praying now will not be needed anymore. Prayers for health and prayers for conversion will not exist. But praise, adoration, and thanksgiving will be offered to God. This is already happening now, confirmed by loud Amen’s, and will continue in all eternity (Revelation 5:13-14).
Even prayers for guidance and wisdom will probably continue. Life on the new earth will be active, as we can read in Revelation 21:24, where it is stated that the kings of the earth will bring their glory into the new Jerusalem. Only God knows everything and can do anything, even on the new earth. So we will continue to need His help and guidance there for everything we do. As we will live in full fellowship with Him, undoubtedly we will pray more on the new earth rather than less. But as we cannot imagine life on the new earth, it is very possible that the nature of prayer will change dramatically from what it is now. Now we are praying to a God whom we cannot see and sometimes do not experience. Then we will be praying to the God whom we are communing with constantly.
Learn to pray now. It is your school of learning to grow in experiencing the Lord. And know that when the fullness of time has come, when Jesus returns, your prayers will grow as much deeper as your experience of God will grow deeper. You will have an eternity to learn!
