Zechariah’s song of thanksgiving

Last updated on December 10, 2025

“Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people” (Luke 1:68).

At first, Zechariah could not believe that he would have a son at last. As punishment for his unbelief, he was unable to speak for a time (Luke 1:5-20; 57-64). But the miracle did happen: his wife became pregnant and John was born. His name means ‘God is gracious’. He would prepare his people for the coming of Jesus, God’s Son.
Full of God’s Spirit, Zechariah praised God’s power and mercy (Luke 2:67). Like Hannah, Zechariah spoke of the Lord’s care for his people and of the horn that was a symbol of His power. (Luke 1:69; 1 Samuel 1:2). In his song, Zechariah refers to hundreds of years of God’s faithfulness. It started with Abraham (Genesis 22:16-18) and would never stop. His song of thanksgiving was also a prophecy: God’s Spirit gave him a glimpse of the future. Like Hannah and Isaiah, he was able to see beyond his circumstances through song. God will remain faithful and not lose sight of His people or forget them. The coming of Israel’s Saviour was imminent!
Sometimes it is difficult to continue to believe that God’s promises are true and will happen. The song of Zechariah can help you to be steadfast in your faith that God never goes back on His word.
Prayer: Thank You, Father, for always keeping Your promises and Your constant care for each of Your children. Help me to keep trusting in Your promises. May they give me and all Your children courage.
Today I choose to sing this song for You … (Pick a song and sing/read it to the Lord)
